What Whataburger says about its shakes

Whataburger's menu calls these drinks shakes and malts and lists them under Drinks & Shakes. It does not publish a recipe for the shake base, and it does not say on the menu or the nutrition chart whether that base meets the legal definition of ice cream.

That matters because in the United States "ice cream" is a defined food. The federal standard requires at least 10% milkfat, and many chains use a soft-serve or "frozen dairy dessert" base that falls under a different name. Without a published ingredient list for the base, nobody outside the company can say which one Whataburger uses, so we do not claim either answer.

What the published data does show: the shake is a dairy product. Whataburger's allergen information lists milk for every shake, and nothing else. The malts add wheat and gluten, which comes from the malt powder. More on how the menu is made is in Whataburger ingredients and quality.

Shake calories by size

Shakes come in three cup sizes: small 16 oz, medium 20 oz and large 32 oz. The calories climb fast with size, because almost all of them come from the dairy base and the syrup.

Price and nutrition of a medium vanilla shake

A medium vanilla shake cost $4.59 at Store #367 (West & San Angelo, San Antonio, TX) on Nov 3, 2026. It has 500 calories, 12 g of fat, 85 g of sugar and 10 g of protein. It also has 7 g of saturated fat, which fits a milk-based dessert.

The seasonal White Chocolate Raspberry Shake was the same $4.59 for a medium and 560 calories; see the White Chocolate Raspberry Shake page. Every flavor and size is on the Whataburger shakes page.

Does Whataburger sell ice cream cones?

Not that we could find. Neither the Dallas nor the San Antonio online menu we read on Nov 3, 2026 listed a cone, a sundae or a cup of plain ice cream. The dessert list was the Hot Apple Pie, Brownie, cookie, Cinnamon Roll and snacks, all on the desserts menu.

If you want something close to plain ice cream, a small vanilla shake is the simplest order. Some people ask for it extra thick; whether a store can do that is up to the crew.

If you avoid dairy

Every shake and malt contains milk, so none of them work for a dairy-free diet. Kitchens also share equipment. The dairy-free guide lists the items that do not contain milk, and the allergen menu has the full chart.
