Has Whataburger Changed? Quality, Size and Price Complaints Checked
Whataburger has not announced any change to its core burger: the #1 is still a 5-inch bun and 5-inch patty, 590 calories, now $5.99. What has clearly changed is price and ownership (sold to BDT Capital in 2019); taste and freshness complaints vary by store.

Why people say Whataburger has changed
This is one of the most argued Whataburger topics online. A Reddit thread in r/Austin titled "Is it me, or has Whataburger taken a big dive in food quality?" passed 540 comments, and an r/houston post, "What happened to Whataburger? Size and quality just took a crazy dive", passed 390. On Quora, "Has Whataburger's quality declined?" has more than 30 answers, with complaints about food held in warmers and rubbery scrambled eggs.
The complaints fall into three groups: the burger feels smaller, the food tastes less fresh than it used to, and it costs more. We can check some of that against data and some of it we cannot.
Size: what the build says today
Whataburger's current online build for the #1 lists a large 5-inch bun and one large 5-inch beef patty, with tomato, lettuce, pickles, diced onions and mustard. The patty works out to about 243 calories, and the whole burger to 590 calories with 29 g of protein.
Whataburger does not publish the patty weight, so a change in weight cannot be confirmed or ruled out from the outside. The 1950 original was described as a quarter-pound patty. Bun and patty sizes are laid out in how big is a Whataburger.
Ownership: the 2019 sale
Many complaint threads date the change to 2019. That year the Dobson family, who had run Whataburger since 1950, sold its majority stake to BDT Capital Partners, a Chicago investment firm. The family kept a small stake and the headquarters stayed in San Antonio.
A change of owner does not prove a change in recipe, and Whataburger has not announced one for its core burgers. The company has grown fast since: the store directory we read lists 1,217 stores in 17 states. The history is in Whataburger facts and history.
Freshness: what is and isn't published
Every Whataburger burger is cooked to order, which is why the online menu lets you change any topping. Whether patties arrive fresh or frozen is a separate question, covered in are Whataburger patties fresh or frozen. How long food sits in a warmer at a given store is not something any published data shows, and it can differ store to store and shift to shift.
If your order seems old, asking for it fresh or with a small change (no onions, extra pickles) means it has to be made for you.
Price: the part that is easy to check
A #1 Whataburger is $5.99 at Store #608 (Dallas Pkwy & Frankford, Dallas, TX), checked Nov 3, 2026. The 1950 burger was 25 cents. On a delivery app the same #1 was $7.43, about 24% more, which is one reason some people feel the value has dropped. The reasons are covered in why is Whataburger so expensive, and the gap between store and app prices in store vs delivery prices.
