Why Is Whataburger So Expensive Now? Prices Then and Now
A #1 Whataburger is $5.99 in the store but was $7.43 on a delivery-app price list, so much of the "expensive" feeling comes from app markups and fees. Menu prices have also risen over time: the first Whataburger in 1950 cost 25 cents (Store #608, Dallas, checked Nov 3, 2026).

What a Whataburger costs now
At Store #608 (Dallas Pkwy & Frankford, Dallas, TX) on Nov 3, 2026, a #1 Whataburger was $5.99 and a #1 Whatameal $9.59. The biggest regular meal, the #3 Triple Meat Whatameal, was $12.69, and the limited Bacon Blaze JalapeƱo Double Whatameal $13.99.
Breakfast is priced at the San Antonio store we checked: a Taquito with Cheese was $3.89, which is why a Reddit thread remembering taquitos "under $3" gets so many replies. Every price is in the Whataburger menu prices guide.
Then and now
The first Whataburger, sold in Corpus Christi in 1950, cost 25 cents. Within a year the price went to 30 cents and then 35 cents, and the 30-cent raise was part of the dispute that ended the founders' partnership (company history as summarized on Wikipedia).
Price rises are not new, then. What is new is how quickly they have added up in the last few years, which matches what happened across fast food. Whataburger does not publish its reasons for individual price changes, and prices vary by location, so two stores in the same city can differ.
Why your total feels higher than the menu
The most common reason a Whataburger order feels expensive is the delivery app. Apps list higher item prices before they add delivery and service fees:
| Item | In-store menu | Delivery-app list | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| #1 Whataburger | $5.99 | $7.43 | 24% |
| #1 Whatameal | $9.59 | $11.89 | 24% |
| #7 Whataburger Jr. | $3.99 | $4.95 | 24% |
| #3 Triple Meat Whatameal | $12.69 | $15.98 | 26% |
| Taquito with Cheese | $3.89 | $4.95 | 27% |
That gap, roughly a quarter or more, explains the Reddit thread about "almost $15 for a meal": a Triple Meat Whatameal is close to $16 on the app list. Order on whataburger.com or in the store to see the menu price. Details are in store vs delivery prices.
How to spend less
- Whatadeals: the Big Ranch Wrap is $3.00 and the More for $4 Jr. sandwiches are $4.00 each, or $7.00 with small fries and a small drink. See the Whatadeals value menu.
- Go Jr.: a #7 Whataburger Jr. is $3.99 against $5.99 for the #1.
- Skip the meal when you do not need the drink: the Whatameal adds $3.60 to a #1.
- Use the app's rewards and current offers; see Whataburger coupons and deals.
